At least eight people including a policeman were killed and six others injured in a suicide blast that took place Wednesday morning in Pakistan's northwest city of Swabi, said police sources.
According to the Swabi district police officer Aijaz Khan, the suicide blast took place at about 11:10 am (local time) at a checkpost in the Anbaar area of Swabi, a city some 80 kilometers northwest of Pakistan's capital Islamabad.
The blast occurred at the checkpost when a motorcade was heading for a public gathering of a political party named Jamiat Ulemae Islam. Local TV reports said that the party chief was the target of the attack, but the party chief was not hurt in the attack.
All the injured have been rushed to the nearby hospital and the blast site has been cordoned off for investigation.
Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari condemned the terrorist attack in a statement released quickly after the blast.
No group has claimed the responsibility for the attack yet. Other details about the blast including the identity of the suicide bomber are not immediately available.
