A shallow undersea-quake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck off Sumatra island on Monday evening, causing no damage or casualties, including in the hardest hit area of Pagaiselatan Mentawai, Ade Edward, an official at Disaster and Mitigation Management Agency in West Sumatra province told Xinhua by phone.
The quake jolted at 21:42 p.m. Jakarta time (1442 GMT) with the epicenter at 78 km southwest of Pagaiselatan Mentawai of West Sumatra province and with a depth of 10 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Hendra Raharja said.
The US Geological Survey reported the quake was measured at 7.5 on the Richter scale with deeper position at 14.2 km under sea bed.
The intensity of the quake was felt at 4 to 5 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Pagaiselatan Mentawai, 3 to 4 MMI in Padang city, the capital of West Sumatra province and Pariaman town of the province, and 3 MMI at nearby Bengkulu province, Raharja told Xinhua.
Moderate aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.0 followed tens minutes later, he said.
The tsunami warning issued following the earthquake was also lifted, as the danger did not happen, said Raharja.
