Strong quake rocks eastern Indonesia

An earthquake with magnitude of 6.8 struck eastern parts of Indonesia on Tuesday, but there were no reports of damages or casualties, the local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency and the Disaster Management Agency said.

The U.S. geological survey reported that the quake was recorded at a lower magnitude of 6.2.

The quake struck at 04:51 a.m. Tuesday (2151 GMT Monday) with epicenter at 262 km northwest Saumlaki of Maluku and the depth at 106 km under seabed, an official of the meteorology and geophysics agency, Rahma Baharudin told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was only felt at 2 to 3 MMI ( Modified Mercally Intensity) at Saumlaki, she said.

A spokesman of the disaster management agency, Priyadi Kardono told Xinhua that there was no building damaged or people injured as the quake's shakes were only weakly felt.
