6.3 magnitude quake rocks Papua, Indonesia

An shallow undersea quake of 6.3 magnitude struck off West Papua in eastern parts Indonesia on early Tuesday evening, but there were no reports of damage or casualty and was not potential for tsunami, officials said.

The quake rocked at 17:21 p.m. Jakarta time (1021 GMT) with epicenter at 131 km Southeast Kaimana of West Papua and with the depth at 10 km, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 2 to 3 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Kaimana, the official said.

The USGS reported on its website that the quake was measured at 5.9 magnitude.

Head of crisis center of Health Ministry Mujiharto confirmed that there were no buildings collapsed or damaged or anyone injured.

"There are no damages or fatality reported so far," he told Xinhua by phone from Manokwari of West Papua.
