An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted the Islas Marias in Mexico's Pacific coast state of Nayarit on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There is no immediate report of injures or damage, said local authorities.

The quake, which occurred at 5:32 p.m. local time (1732 GMT), was centered some 100 km from the coast of Nayarit with a depth of 36 km, according to the USGS.

The islands with less than 1,200 indigenous population are home to a federal prison.

Mexico's Pacific coast suffered serious quake damage in 1995, when an offshore quake triggered a tsunami that struck coastal city Manzanillo, killing over 100 people.

A 7.2-magnitude quake killed four people and injured some 100 in Mexicali, the capital of northern Baja California state, in April.
