One person died in the 6.4- magnitude earthquake that hit southern Mexico's Oaxaca state Wednesday, local media said.

The man, Armandao Lugo Hernandez, was crushed by a support beam when his house collapsed in the town of San Andres Huaxpaltepec, Carlso Ramos Aragon, the director of the State Civil Protection Agency said.

He said that people had seen damage to homes and other buildings in the towns of San Francisco Ixhuatan and La Reforma. Civil protection staff and soldiers are coordinating to help those affected in the towns, he added.

The quake struck Mexico at around 2:22 a.m. local time, with an epicenter located at 13 kilometers south of coastal city Pinotepa Nacional. Buildings in Pinotepa city centre were evacuated, and the quake was felt as far away as Mexico City.

Civil protection authorities reported modest damage to buildings in Gulf of Mexico coast state Veracruz and Oaxaca's neighbor on the Pacific coast Guerrero. There have been four much more modest aftershocks since the main quake.
