At least eight people died, four more injured and 20 others missing in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Mexico, official sources said Tuesday.

According to police reports, 20 people are buried under the mud in Porfirio Diaz locality of Coatepec Harinasthe municipality in the State of Mexico.

The landslide, which occurred on Monday night at about 10:00 p.m. local time (0300 GMT Tuesday), located 8.5 km from the San Miguel Totolmajac highway and buried five cars, the Emergency Services of the State of Mexico said.

Rescue works by the Army and the state police began on Monday midnight, but were suspended due to lack of visibility and fear of more landslides. They resumed rescue operation on Tuesday morning.

Parts of Mexico are enduring the worst rainy season on record, which has triggered heavy flooding and displaced thousands of people from their homes in the low-lying southeast.
