Taliban commander captured, 6 killed in NE. Afghanistan

Afghan and NATO-led troops during an operation against Taliban insurgents eliminated six fighters and captured their commander, a statement of the alliance released in Kabul Saturday said.

"An Afghan and coalition security force captured the Taliban military commissioner for six Takhar districts in the province Friday," the statement said.

And six Taliban fighters were also killed during the operation, which according to the statement was conducted in Darquad district.

It did not identify the name of the arrested commander but added, "He served as the deputy shadow governor for Takhar province."

There were no casualties on the civilians, it stated, adding " the assault force protected the women and children throughout the search operation".

The NATO-led troops also on Thursday said in a statement that eight to 12 Taliban insurgents were killed and injured in Takhar province but the Afghan government said all the victims were innocent civilians.
