The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Saturday in a press release confirmed capturing a Taliban deputy commander in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Afghanistan's southern Helmand province, who commanded more than 100 fighters during an Afghan-led security force operation on Aug. 4 in the restive province.
"The deputy commander along with several additional suspected insurgents had been detained by joint forces," the press release added.
However, it did not identify the name of the arrested commander and the exact date of his arrest.
"We're happy to announce another key capture of Taliban leadership operating in southern Afghanistan," the press release further said.
Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have yet to make comment.
"These operations prevent violent extremists from being able to threaten Afghan sovereignty or maintain safe havens from which they can threaten the security of Afghan people," U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Opertions Center director said in press release.
