12 killed in train accident in Spain

At least 12 people were killed after a train hit a group of youngsters who were walking across tracks at a rail station in northeastern Spain late Wednesday, local media said.

Fifteen others were wounded in the the accident at the Castelldefels Playa station near Barcelona, Spanish national radio said.

The youngsters were taking part annual Saint John's Day celebrations which fell on June 23. There is a walking underpass at the station, but those young people chose to walk on the tracks.

The accident scene has been sealed off and there is a large presence of police, firemen and rescue workers as TV footage shows.
