Earlier this year, southwestern China struggled with a severe drought condition. More than 22 million people and 13 million cattle were suffering from a shortage of drinking water. Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan provinces, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Chongqing municipalities were the worst hit areas, accounting for 85 percent of drought-hit farm land.

From April, frequent rainstorms have inundated many areas in southern China. Cities and rural areas have suffered severe flooding in Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hubei provinces, Chongqing municipality and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Starting on May 15, a tornado, along with a hailstorm, tore through several townships in Heilongjiang province. On the same day, a hailstorm also hit the Aksu area in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. About 5,300 hectares of croplands were damaged. 60 percent of the damaged land will not produce any yield this year. In the northern part of Xinjiang, a blizzard has damaged nearly 7,300 hectares' of crops. The spring plough in some areas is delayed. The blizzard has also cut off power and water supplies, and increased the danger of floods.
