The UN Security Council opened its first summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament in its headquarters in New York. Countries at the summit unanimously approved a resolution aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons.

Leaders are gathering for the goal of a nuclear-free world.

US President Barack Obama opened the historic meeting. The resolution drafted by the US calls for more efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. It also calls for action to promote disarmament, and reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism.

The idea for all this is to seek a safer world.

The resolution urged all countries that have not signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to do so.

The resolution also called for an end to the proliferation of atomic weapons.
