The world's fastest man smashed his own world record and took athletics to another level again on Sunday. 22 year-old Jamaican Usain Bolt clocked 9.58 seconds to win the 100 metre final at the World Championships in Berlin.

Olympic champion and world record holder Usian Bolt of Jamaica, defending champion Tyson Gay and the previous world record holder Asafa Powell set up a breathtaking spectacle in the men's 100 meters.

The 22 year-old Bolt had pledged to capture the only major title still missing from his now perfect collection.

Bolt made a flying getaway out of the blocks, and was clear after only 20 metres. Bolt demolished his own world record, shaving 11-hundredths of a second off the time he set in Beijing almost a year ago. There was no "showboating" this time as he broke the tape in 9.58 seconds.

He hugged his friend Powell, who took the bronze in 9.84 and completed a lap of honour to the cheers of some 70,000 cheering fans.

Gay was left behind despite recording the third fastest time in history, with 9.71.

Day two's morning session produced some strong performances and a fair share of drama.

In the women's 10 km walk, Russia's Olga Kaniskina crossed the line first in one hour, 28 minutes and nine seconds. Chinese Liu Hong took the bronze medal.
