The Iraqi officials said that they were fulfilling their mission to extend their sovereignty over all areas that had been previously occupied by foreign forces. Iran's government applauded the action.
These images were released by the Mujahedeen-e-Kalkh, or MeK, which launched armed attacks on Iran during the 1970s and 80s. The group says Iraqi forces used batons against the residents gathered at the camp's gates. And some demonstrators were injured during the clashes. The date, location or authenticity of the footage has not been verified.
The MeK alleges seven of its members at the Camp Ashraf were killed in the clash a charge the Iraqi government denied.
Iraqi authorities say they entered the Iranian quarter to set up a police station by using "non-lethal force". They say the operation was part of implementing the rule of law in their territory.
