The world's first giant panda conceived through artificial fertilization with frozen sperm has been born in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Eleven-year-old You You gave birth at 7:41 a.m. on Thursday at the Ya'an base to an apparently healthy cub. This marks the first artificial fertilization using frozen panda sperm a breakthrough for breeding the endangered species.
Using this technology, sperm can be kept frozen for decades. The center moved its pandas from Wolong to the Bifengxia breeding center in Ya'an City after the earthquake in May 12 last year.
