Zhang's mother is an actress of Jinju or Shanxi opera, one of China's traditional operas. Zhang started learning the cello at 8 and began composing at 13. Even today,Zhang still loves the music of the 60s and 70s. He's particularly fond of the recording styles of the era and the nature of its sound. Zhang also collects ancient musical instruments. All these have helped Zhang to create his own music style today.
Zhang came to Beijing in 1991. He entered the industry as a production intern. Over the following years, he's been the producer for many famous singers, inclduing Xu Wei, Faye Wong, Dou Wei and Pu Shu.
His background of classical music made him a lover of European music, especially British music. And his sensitivity means he prefers producing concept albums.
That's why he's said no to many big names in the past but has always chosen what he wanted to do and even produced music for next to nothing for some singers.
