Few expected great things from the low-budget film "Crazy Stone." To the surprise of many, it was a hit. And lead actor Guo Tao, shot into the upper echelon of Chinese actors, in demand. As the New Year approaches, Chinese cinemas prepare for the usual flurry of big new releases and long queues of eager fans. Among this season's New Year films no less than five - feature Guo Tao in principal roles.
Guo Tao established himself as a stage actor at the China National Theater. During his years of training at the Central Drama institute Guo earned a reputation as a creative, avant garde performer. After graduation in 1992 he took top billing in several major stage productions. His achievements were recognized by the Ministry of Culture, which bestowed top national honors on his work. Among all the stage productions directed by Meng Jinghui, nearly half, feature Guo Tao in principal roles. Among these are "Waiting for Godot", "Balcony", "The Rhino in Love", and "Yearning for a Secular Life".
