German defender Heiko Westermann will miss the World Cup in South Africa due to a foot injury, said the German football federation on Sunday.

The 27-year-old defender suffered a navicular bone fracture at the friendly against Hungary (3-0) in the dying minutes of the match after he tried to clear the ball from penalty area.

Westermann is the fifth German international who will miss the World Cup due to injury after goalkeeper Rene Adler, midfielder Michael Ballack, midfielder Christian Traesch and striker Simon Rolfes.

"I'm certainly frustrated. It was my objective to play at the World Cup in South Africa," said Westerman after the public announcement.

Westermann has attended 19 international games for Germany and netted twice since he joined the German squad in 2008.
