Wang Zheng was born in Xiji county, Ningxia province in 1962 and began his photographer career in 1982. He is now a freelance photographer. He has taken part in many exhibitions, including personal shows in three Beijing photography salons in 1988, and 10 photographers' exhibitions on "Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Three Gorges" in Taiwan and Hong Kong in 1999. He photographed in Xihaigu from 1995 to 2000 and exhibited his work in Holland and Venice in 2001.

 

"Moslems in Xihaigu"records the natural and cultural ecology in Moslem settlements in the northern mountainous area of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Some years ago Wang began to use a sociological methodology to make his research more systematic. He has covered every facet of local Moslems' way of life and work and tried hard to decipher the inner logic among these documentary images. Together with the abundant documentation these pictures form an important historical iconography. Wang's achievement is irreplaceable and impossible to ignore. (Curator: Liu Shuyong)
