Who will light the Olympic flame?
Adjust font size:

Liu Xiang receives the Olympic torch from Chinese President Hu Jintao, March 31, 2008.

Current rumors about the Olympic Flame lighting ceremony have it based around an ancient Chinese legend of a phoenix returning to her nest, expressing the traditional Chinese concept of harmony between man and nature. According to ceremony director Zhang Yimou, "The opening ceremony will blend in with the unique beauty of the Bird's Nest Stadium."

But who is going to light the torch? A BOCOG official admitted that someone has been chosen, but added that the person's identity is a "state secret."

In an online poll world champion hurdler Liu Xiang came out as top choice with 52 percent of the votes. But Liu's main focus is on winning gold and he may not wish to attend repeated rehearsals for the lighting ceremony. Furthermore, since Liu has already served as the torch bearer during the relay, traditional rules him out as the final bearer.

Another likely candidate is basketball star Yao Ming. His worldwide fame would make him a popular choice.

Some reports have suggested a child from the earthquake area will light the flame, to embody the Olympic spirit of fraternity.

In a month's time we will know the answer but until then we'll have to wait and see.
