Purely natural makeup does not exist, a recent report from China Consumer's Association claimed.

The report said makeup is a mix of several ingredients including chemical ingredients. Deionized water accounts for most of the makeup, and natural plant ingredients constitute only a fraction of all the materials.

Therefore, purely natural makeup using only ingredients extracted from plants is merely an advertising stunt from cosmetic companies, the report said.

"Some of the ingredients in the makeup may be natural, but its main part and carriers must be synthetic, " Zhang Jingyuan, general secretary of Chinese Flavor Cosmetics Industry Association, said.

Manager of Public Relations of L'Oreal China, Ren Weiwei, said makeup belongs to a branch of the chemical industry called "fine chemicals." Therefore, chemical means have to be used.

报告称，通常情况下，化妆品是由多种成分，包括化学成分配制而成，其中占成分比例最多的常常是去离子水，天然植物成分只是其中一小部分。

因此，纯天然植物化妆品的说法，只是商家的一种宣传噱头。

中国香料香精化妆品工业协会秘书长张京原表示：“化妆品有些添加的物质可能是天然的，但是它的主体的组成、载体等这些东西肯定都是合成的。”

欧莱雅（中国）公关部经理任威威同时表示，化妆品属于化工行业的一个分支——精细化工，就必然会有一些化学的手段。
