| Local governments have stripped 40 million farmers in China of their land and sold it to real estate developers, a senior government economics researcher said, the Beijing News reported. |

| Song Xiaowu, director of the Income Distribution and Poverty Research Center at Beijing Normal University and president of the China Society of Economic Reform, said the government has appropriated large plots of land collectively owned by farmers and sold usage rights to real estate developers, with farmers receiving only a small percentage of the leasing revenue. |

The real estate developers earned 8.5 million yuan on the project, while the government raked in 6.2 million yuan in revenue, but the farmers only got 470,000 yuan. |
