A Swedish man who was arrested after trying to split atoms in his kitchen said Wednesday he was only doing it as a hobby, AP reports.

Richard Handl had the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium in his apartment. The 31-year-old Handl said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments.

Only later did he realize it might not be legal and sent a question to Sweden's Radiation Authority, which answered by sending the police.

男子家中分裂原子被捕

       据美联社报道，一位瑞典男子由于在自家厨房进行原子分裂实验周三被捕，该男子称他这么做完全是出于兴趣爱好。

       现年31岁的理查德·汉德家中存有放射性物质镭、镅和铀。他说他试图在家里自己建一个核反应堆，这个实验已经进行了好几个月了，并且他一直发博客更新自己的实验进程。

       之后他突然想到这样做可能不合法，就打电话向瑞典辐射管理部门询问，结果警察就上门了。

       汉德说：“我一直对物理和化学感兴趣，我只是想看看自己究竟能不能在家进行原子裂变。”
