Party Members, Officials Urged to Better Serve the Public
Shanghai Party Committee has called on its members to always work for the best interests of the people and continue to focus their efforts on economic development.

That was the message from Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Liangyu, who addressed a plenary meeting of the Shanghai Committee of Communist Party of China yesterday.

Although the city's economic development has successfully overcome the challenges posed by the spread of SARS in the first six months, Shanghai should still keep its vigilance against the disease, he said.

"In spite of the SARS attack, we will still try to achieve double-digit economic growth for this year," Chen said to the more than 300 participants.

Shanghai's economy grew by 11.4 percent in the first six months, according to the city's Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor Han Zheng. The added value of industrial output grew by 18 percent while fixed-asset investment grew by 20 percent. Exports jumped 50 percent.

At the meeting, 58 committee members approved and adopted two decisions: to launch a new campaign of studying and implementing the important thought of "Three Represents" and to enhance and improve the Party's grassroots organizations.

The Three Represents states that the Party must always represent the development trend of China's advanced productive forces, the orientation of advanced culture and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of Chinese people.
