Romanian President Traian Basescu sent on Monday afternoon a letter to the Chamber of Deputies and Senate speakers, warning them the risk of a breakage between the political class and society, if the new government proposed by Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu receives investiture vote in the Parliament.
Basescu reminded that, after the election in 2004, he designed a prime minister to represent the "Justice and Truth" Alliance in the elections held in 2004. The alliance consists of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Party (PD).
"As a distinct formation, PNL was neither enlisted in the electoral race, nor presented an own candidate for the office of Prime Minister," added the head of state.
Basescu pointed out that, by "unilaterally" eliminating PD ministers from the executive, the government's political make-up was radically modified, so that the new ruling formula is lacking its democratic legitimacy and no longer observes the electorate's will expressed in 2004 elections.
The president underlined that the government is to be made of PNL and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) representatives, two formations that hold in the current Romania's Parliament configuration just 22 percent of the overall number of mandates.
Liberal Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu sent to the parliament on Monday a new governmental formula based on a Liberal structure, with 4 UDMR members, but none of the PD.
"PD will not vote Cabinet Tariceanu as it is illegitimate, has a impostor premier, who betrayed the Alliance," said on Monday the Democrat leader Emil Boc. The prime minister is no longer supported by those people who wanted him head of government, said Boc.
The parliament will cast vote on Tuesday on the new formula suggested by Tariceanu.
Romania is currently witnessing a period of political turbulence. The feud has pitted President Traian Basescu's PD against Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu's PNL. Meanwhile, the opposition Social Democrats are trying to impeach the president.
