Romania to Join Euro Zone in 2014
Adjust font size:

Romania has set 2014 as the deadline for its adoption of the euro, according to the Convergence Program approved by the Romanian government on Wednesday.

The program also set the main strategies Romania will take to emulate the EU level of development.

Romania now has less than seven years before its targeted euro adoption, and the interval "will be necessary to allow our country to implement some measures and to carry out such reforms to ensure the economic capacity needed to support the euro," said Oana Marinescu, a spokeswoman for the Romanian government.

She also said the government is committed to improving the business environment, making the labor market more flexible and conducting reforms in the public administration to boost Romania's economic competitiveness.

Maintaining the macro-economic stability, reducing inflation process and using the EU fund more efficiently were also among the key points of program.

Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union (EU) on Jan. 1, adding the total number of EU members to 27.
