The US-led war against Iraq, which began last week, was part of the geopolitical strategy of the United States to enforce its hegemony over the Middle East, Guatemala's radio quoted an analyst as saying on Tuesday.
The United States sought to strengthen its dominion and political influence over the Middle East. Hence it had to eliminate the opponent leader, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who was once its ally in the fight against opposing countries, such as Iran, Armando de la Torre told the radio.
He affirmed that to a dominant country in the international arena, there were no friends or foes: simply interests involved, and in this sense, alliances were made or not made according to its temporal goal.
The report from Guatemala City quoted the analyst as saying that to establish the US hegemony over the Middle East and gain support at home for his reelection, US President George W. Bush has taken the goal of "eliminating the ill-fated regime" of Saddam.
