The number of students recruited for postgraduate study in Shanghai hit a record high of 18,500 this year, a 27.4 percent rise from a year earlier, said a source with municipal education authorities on Tuesday.
The outbreak of SARS postponed local enrollment to late May.
Some 79,300 students applied for advanced study in Shanghai this year, up 32.6 percent from a year ago.
The number of students exempted from postgraduate entrance exams was on a big rise to 3,291 this year from 2,007 last year.
Twenty-one local colleges and universities as well as 30 research institutions are expected to offer courses and training for the students.
