UN Secretary General Kofi Annan met for half an hour Monday with Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao and hailed China's cooperation with African countries, Annan's spokesman's office said.
"The meeting was warm and cordial," the office said in a statement.
It said Hu "reiterated China's view of the UN as an irreplaceable organization and voiced China's full support for it." He also shared with Annan Beijing's vision of China's drive to modernize.
"The secretary general particularly praised China for its cooperation, help and assistance for African countries," the statement said.
Annan and Hu also discussed the Middle East and "agreed that problems could not be resolved through violence."
Hu rang the opening Bell at the New York stock exchange and paid a 10-minute visit to the ruins of the World Trade Center, destroyed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
