China's top legislator Li Peng met Thursday with Artur Chilingalov, vice-chairman of Russia's Duma, who is in Chongqing for the annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP).
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China and Russia have established friendly and cooperative relations in various fields, including good ties between legislative bodies of the two countries.
Li said the two countries should reinforce strategic cooperation in order to play an active role in safeguarding both regional and global peace and stability.
Russia attaches great importance to peace and stability in Asia, and is willing to take part in the activities of the AAPP, said Chilingalov.
Both sides agreed that the parliamentary organs of China and Russia would carry out more exchanges and cooperation.
The AAPP, the largest regional parliamentary organization in Asia, opened its annual meeting Tuesday in Beijing. The meeting is continuing in southwest China's Chongqing from April 17 to 19.
