China's top legislator Li Peng said that the National People's Congress (NPC) should play a more effective role in government supervision.
During an inspection tour of northern Shanxi Province, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the NPC urged NPC members to work on issues which widely concerned people.
Li said that the building of democratic and legal systems was critical to China's political reform and the right of supervision according to law was an important job of the NPC.
Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, examined the local economic development, urban construction, environmental protection and tourism accompanied by local officials.
He also suggested that the agricultural province improve farmers' income and stick to compulsory education in countryside.
