China's top legislator Wednesday called for the promotion of supervision of the National People's Congress (NPC) and local people's congresses, in keeping with China's Constitution and laws.
When visiting south China's Hainan Province, Li Peng, chairman of the NPC's Standing Committee, said that legislation and supervision are equally important to the NPC.
During his visit, Li listened to opinions and discussed relevant issues concerning the supervisory work of the local legislature, including the drafting of a supervision law.
He said that local people's congresses and their standing committees have accumulated a great deal of experience in supervision, which has helped improve the work of government organs and judicial departments.
Many forms of supervision are carried out by local people's congresses, such as the reports of deputies on their work and public appraisal which are presented to the people's congresses and which are encouraged by the NPC Standing Committee. They will become part of China's supervision law when the time is right, said Li.
He said that the NPC Standing Committee gives importance to the making of a supervision law. But more researches and discussions are needed to draft and enact the law.
