Famous Chinese film director Tian Zhuangzhuang and director-cum-cameraman Gu Changwei discussed the development of "mobile films" with mobile handset giant Nokia on Tuesday afternoon.
The film directors were "enthusiastic" about shooting films for playback on a mobile handset, which is regarded as the fifth-generation medium.
Gu said that the "real charm" of mobile films comes from public participation, while Tian even said that his students in the Beijing Film College could do their homework by shooting mobile films.
Deng Yuanyun, vice-president of the Nokia (China) Investment Co. Ltd., said that Nokia is keen to cooperate with the Beijing Film College on mobile films.
According to Deng, the "bottleneck" for developing "mobile films" is the restriction of data flow on existing networks owned by China Mobile and China Unicom, two of China's leading mobile telecommunications companies.
However, Deng is optimistic that 3G technology, which is key to the popularization of "mobile films," will "mature" before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
