Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent a message of congratulations to George W. Bush Thursday for his election as the United States president.
In the message to Bush, Jiang said that at the dawn of the new century, China and US shoulder important common responsibilities in many areas that bear on social development and prosperity of the two countries as well as mankind.
The Chinese president also said that a stable and growing Sino-US relationship is not only in the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, but also conducive to the maintenance and promotion of peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and the world at large.
“During your presidency, I am ready to work together with you to promote a sound and stable development of Sino-US relations in the new century on the basis of the principles enshrined in the three Sino-US Joint Communiques,” Jiang said in the message.
Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao Thursday also sent a message of congratulation to Richard B. Cheney, the newly elected vice president of the United States.
