Living Buddha condemns riot

A living Buddha of Songzanlin Lamaser, said, "From the perspective of religion, behavior like beating, smashing, looting, burning, and killing are strictly forbidden in Buddhist doctrine. I hope monks will concentrate on studying, abide by the law and regulations of the country, and follow the doctrines of Buddhist scripture."

The living Buddha said the major themes of Tibetan Buddhism are mercy, doing good deeds and regulating one's temperament. He said the rioters seriously violated the rules, especially a handful of monks who were involved in the riots. He expressed sadness about these incidents. The temple is located five kilometers north of Shangri-la, formerly known as Zhongdian.
