At least seven people, including two children, are still in critical condition a day after a building fire killed 17 and injured 25 in Beijing on Monday morning, according to local hospital sources.
Most of the injured victims suffered burns or smoke inhalation and another seven are in serious condition, said a source from the Beijing Jishuitan Hospital on Tuesday.
All of the 25 injured, except for a 6-year-old girl, are being treated at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital. The girl is hospitalized at the Beijing Children's Hospital.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Monday in a building in the town of Jiugong in Beijing's Daxing district, killing 17 migrant workers and injuring 25 others.
Police said the fire started in an unlicensed garment workshop on the building's ground floor. People were seen trying to break through the building's barred windows and jumping out of the building to escape the fire.
The building was illegally built by a local resident surnamed Zhang, who leased out the building to the owners of the garment business and to migrant workers seeking accommodation.
Police have not released a formal statement on the cause of the accident.
