Saturday will be the fifth Cultural Heritage Day in China. There are already 1,400 items listed for China cultural heritage now, but that number should be reduced.
Feng Jicai, state councilor and president of China Society for the Study of Folk Literature and Art, made the remark recently. He said having too many heritage listings makes it hard to remember whether they belong to national listings or not, and he has to use the internet to make sure. The listings should be reduced, he added.
Feng pointed out that the government has made efforts to progressively strengthen the protection of cultural heritage since 2006.
As part of the commemoration, the Ministry of Culture is hosting a large-scale exhibition in Beijing from June 9 to 17 in the Beijing Exhibition Center. It will showcase the works made by masters of arts and crafts from 23 provinces, including Beijing, Shanxi, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet, Gansu and Qinghai.
Though we have many wonderful heritages in Chinese history, not all projects are suitable for the Cultural Heritage List, such as local snacks and wines.
Feng said that in order to protect cultural heritage, the government should set up a warning and removal system, and the listings of China cultural heritage should be supervised by a committee of experts.
