Lai has designed the set for a new rendition of the 2002 play "Love on a Two-Way Street", which will have a four-day run at Beijing's PLA Theater starting on September 30, the Beijing Morning Post reports.

Lai, who has written and directed such long-running plays as "Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land" and "That Evening, We Performed Xiangsheng", was involved in the scenic design of his earlier work "Watch TV with Me", but his name didn't appear in the stage design credit list back then, the report says.

Lai told the newspaper that he had become a patron of Beijing's furniture malls as he crafted the stage for "Love on a Two-Way Street".

"I'm probably more familiar with Gaobeidian than locals," the Taiwan director said. The area of Gaobeidian houses one of the largest furniture markets in Beijing.

"Love on a Two-Way Street" is produced by the Taipei-based Performance Workshop of which Lai is a co-founder. The play, written and directed by Ismene Ting, premiered in Taipei in 2002.

The light-hearted story tells of a cab driver who secretly enjoys a life with two wives until an accident occurs. Yu Entai plays the polygamist for the Beijing edition.
