Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun, a special envoy of the Chinese government, arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday for a two-day visit.
Upon his arrival, Zhai told reporters at the airport that he will make contacts with Syrian leaders and various political factions during his stay in Damascus, and strive to "play a positive role" in and "make some contribution" to seeking a proper solution to the Syrian issue.
Syrian Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous, who met Zhai at the airport, told Xinhua that the Chinese envoy's visit is of "great importance," and the two countries need to continue their political consultations.
President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid Mualem will meet Zhai Saturday to explore ways to boost bilateral ties and hold consultations on the Syrian situation as well as regional and international affairs, Arnous said.
He said that China has adopted a just and equitable stance toward the Syrian issue, which is based on objective realities.
On Thursday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a press briefing that Zhai is expected to exchange views with the Syrian government and relevant parties on the current Syrian situation and push for a peaceful and proper solution to the Syrian crisis.
