German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday welcomed the death of Libya's fallen leader Muammar Gaddafi, calling it a "fresh start" for Libya.
"Libya is now free to make a fresh start and begin peaceful democratic reforms after the death of Muammar Gaddafi," Merkel said.
Merkel spoke of a "final point" for the Gaddafi regime and "an important day for the Libyans."
She emphasized that Germany is on the side of Libya on the road to support its process of democracy, rule by law and national reconciliation.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that Germany was willing to help alleviate the suffering of Libyan people, referring to the medical care it provided to casualties.
On October 18, some 39 seriously injured Libyans arrived in Germany to receive medical treatment in German army hospitals.
