Two mortar shells slammed the vicinity of Faculty of Literature and Art of a university in the Syrian capital of Damascus, state-TV said Wednesday, while reporting no casualties.

Ambulances have rushed to the scene of the blast, which is adjacent to the military courthouse in the Mazzeh area of central Damascus.

Also, heavy shelling was heard reverberating across nearby districts in what appeared to be the government troops' response to the mortar shells, witnesses said.

Mortar attacks have become increasingly common in the unrest- torn Syria, as the rebels seem to have obtained more weapons smuggled across the Syrian borders, a U.S. newspapers said recently.

Earlier Wednesday, activists' networks reported air raids and shelling by the government forces on several areas, most notably in the rebellious suburbs of Damascus.

Syria has been witnessing turmoil for nearly two year, and a recent UN tally placed the overall deaths at more than 70,000.
