A senior Iranian lawmaker said Friday that the influence of the Western powers on the United Nations has undermined the body's role in resolving the Syrian crisis, Press TV reported.
"The United Nations cannot fulfill its role in resolving the Syria unrest as long as it is under the pressure and influence of foreign powers," Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini was quoted as saying.
"In fact, the Americans, the Europeans, and in particular the Zionist lobbies have nullified the UN role in (resolving) the Syria crisis and they do not allow the United Nations to fulfill its responsibility there," Naqavi-Hosseini said.
Certain foreign sides do not cooperate with UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi to pursue a political solution to the Syrian crisis, as their demands do not match the rights of the Syrian government and nation, he said.
Brahimi recently held meetings with Syrian officials about possible diplomatic solutions, but no details have been released about the talks.
Naqavi-Hosseini said the United Nations lacks the will to solve the Syria issue politically, adding that the international body must take practical measures to stop terrorist attacks and the massacre of people by militants.
Iran is the major regional ally of the Syrian government in its conflict with the armed opposition groups.
Syria has been in unrest for over 21 months, leaving hundreds of thousands dead or injured.
