The United Nations should act more severely against the Syrian government, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal said on Tuesday.

Rosenthal made the remarks when he met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the yearly UN summit in New York.

Last week, the Dutch minister advocated making the sanctions against the Syrian government more efficient.

Apart from financial sanctions, Rosenthal called for other sanctions such as blocking the access to the technology required to censor websites or track people online.

The European Union imposed sanctions this month, depriving the regime of President Bashar al-Assad of a quarter of its earnings denominated in foreign currency, forcing the country to reduce production from 380,000 barrels per day to about 250,000 barrels per day one month later. Enditem
