A proposal by Western countries to set up a no-fly zone over Syria would be considered an aggression against the Middle East country, a senior Syrian official said.
The no-fly zone, suggested by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other Western officials, "will be an aggression against Syria and Syria is a country that will not accept any aggression and will defend itself, " Bouthaina Shaaban, the Syrian president's special envoy and political and media adviser, told Xinhua in a recent interview.
Asked whether such a non-fly zone could be established under a different guise in the future, she said, "I don't think so ... And I hope this will never be agreed upon."
The envoy also said supporting rebels with arms and money was an interference in Syria and a violation of Syrian sorveignty, and foreign support for anti-government groups was the reason for the continued violence in Syria during past 18 months.
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met Shaaban Thursday to discuss the current situation in Syria.
