Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo is en route to Switzerland on Wednesday morning following a bus accident on Tuesday night in which at least 28 people, including 22 Belgian school children, lost their lives.
Twenty-four other passengers were injured, according to a statement published Wednesday morning by the prime minister's office.
Di Rupo expressed his dismay and sadness over the accident. "It is a tragic day for the whole of Belgium," he said.
The government is currently contacting the families of the victims and has made two army planes available to transport relatives to the scene of the crash.
On Tuesday night, a bus registered in Belgium crashed into the wall of a highway tunnel in southwest Switzerland on the way back from a ski trip, killing at least 28 people.
