China on Monday urged relevant parties in Somalia to enhance unity and reconciliation in order to end the transitional period on time.
Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at an open debate of the Security Council on the situation in Somalia. He said that at present, the peace process in Somalia has shown positive momentum. The implementation of roadmap for end of transition in Somalia has made progress. The humanitarian situation in the country has also significantly improved. China welcomes these developments.
Wang noted that the realization of national reconciliation is the ultimate means to restoring Somali peace and stability. "We hope relevant parties in Somali can make advantage of the current favorable conditions, further strengthen the unity and reconciliation. We also hope they can comprehensively implement the Roadmap and end the transitional period on time," he said.
China hopes the Somali transitional federal institutions could further build their capacities and undertake as soon as possible effective governance over the country, said Wang. "We hope relevant factions in Somalia can forsake violence and terrorism and join the peace process."
China calls upon the international community to continue its effort in the following areas to promote peace process in Somalia. First, to strengthen political process and support the mediation efforts made by the UN and the African Union as well as to encourage relevant parties to fully implement the Roadmap. Second, to reinforce the logistic support, help Solimali transitional federal government to improve governance and to implement Security Council Resolution 2036 in a timely and comprehensive manner. Last but not the least, to enhance humanitarian relief and continue to help Somalia to improve humanitarian situation, according to the ambassador.
"We hope the international community could further strengthen coordination, honor their commitments and make due contributions to the realization of lasting peace in Somalia," said Wang.
