An officer and five army personnel were killed late Monday by rocket-propelled grenades launched by armed groups at a law-enforcement forces' checkpoint in a suburb of Syria's capital Damascus, state-run SANA news agency reported Tuesday.

The attack, which was carried out against the checkpoint in the Sahnaya suburb, some 9 kilometers southwest of Damascus, also left seven other military personnel wounded.

In the central part of Homs province, a security agent was killed by the gunshots of armed groups at a checkpoint, said SANA, adding that a railway engineer, Haidar Abbas Ismail, was also gunned down in front of his home at al-Shammas neighborhood in the restive province.

Meanwhile, the private al-Watan newspaper said a number of military personnel were killed in Homs, including Colonel Bassam Ali Ismail, by "terrorist" groups, adding that the national hospital in Homs received nine unidentified bodies Monday.

In eastern Deir al-Zour province, specialized authorities seized a Toyota pickup truck loaded with weapons, according to SANA, adding that the seized items include PKC guns, 33 automatic rifles, ammunition and fake passports.

Also, 10 "terrorists" in two cars opened fire on the Municipality of al-Naeimiyeh village in al-Salamiyeh area and no injuries were reported, said SANA.

Syrian government says that the turmoil in Syria is plotted by terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs. It said more than 2,000 army and security personnel were killed during the months-long unrest, while the United Nations put the death toll in the country at more than 5,000.
