China's top legislature on Monday reviewed a bill proposed by the State Council, or Cabinet, to ratify the China-Italy extradition treaty.
Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi was entrusted by the State Council to brief the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on the basic information of the treaty.
"The ratification and operation of the treaty will be conducive to promoting judicial cooperation between the two countries and to promoting friendly and cooperative relations," Yang said.
The 21-article extradition treaty covers issues such as extradition obligations, extradition offenses, reasons that can and should be used to refuse extradition, rules on property transfer and the settlement of disputes, among others.
Authorized by the State Council, the Chinese negotiation team made up of officials from various departments started talks with the Italian side regarding the treaty in May 2010 in Beijing.
After the two sides reached agreement on all of the articles in the treaty, Yang and then-Italian Justice Minister Angelino Alfano signed the treaty on behalf of the two nations on Oct. 7, 2010 in Rome.
