Capt. Steven Sambar, major crimes division commanding officer at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), told reporters that the man fired several rounds of shots at the downtown office building that houses the consulate-general. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
The man surrendered to the LAPD's Wilshire command at around 4:45 p.m. local time (0045 GMT Friday), more than two hours after the shooting took place, he added.
The Chinese consulate made solemn presentations to U.S. State Department's office in L. A. over the shooting and demand that the security of the consulate be beefed up and anyone responsible for the shooting be held accountable according to the law.
U.S. authorities have already started investigating the case.
