Three girls of a family in Kunduz province 250 km north of Afghan capital Kabul have been disfigured as unknown men sprayed acid on their faces Tuesday night, Nadira Gia, the Director of Women Affairs Department in Kunduz province said Wednesday.

"Some unidentified men entered a house in Bulakawal village in the outskirt of Kunduz provincial capital the Kunduz city last night and after beating the members of the family dozed acid on the faces of three sisters," Gia told press.

The innocent suffered girls are 8, 12 and 17 years old and the condition of the elder one is critical, she added.

Gia also said the attackers had badly beaten the father of the innocent girls before leaving the house.

The attackers have made their good escape and no one has been arrested so far, she further said.

Violence against women in Afghanistan is on the rise despite government efforts to protect women rights. More than 2,290 cases of violence against women including forced marriages, under-aged marriages, beating by in-laws and family members had been registered in 2010, according to Afghan Human Rights Commission.

In some countryside and villages held by Taliban militants, some women have even been stoned to death by the insurgents over the past couple of years.
